Whatnot vs TikTok Shop: two live-selling platforms, two fee shapes

Both platforms sell through video, and both look cheap on the headline rate. The difference is what the rate covers: Whatnot's 8% excludes shipping and tax, TikTok's 6% includes processing but not the creator who actually makes the sale.

What each fee is charged on

Whatnot charges 8% commission on the item's final sale price, excluding shipping and tax. On top of that it charges 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing on the whole order value — including shipping — so the effective rate is higher than 8% whenever shipping is charged.

TikTok Shop charges a 6% referral fee that includes payment processing, on the item price. There is no separate processing line, no listing fee and no subscription.

Worked at a $35.00 sale, $10.00 unit cost and $6.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.

On the platform fee alone, TikTok wins

At $35 TikTok takes $2.10 and Whatnot takes $4.12 — 6% against 11.8%. Whatnot's processing on the full order is what closes the headline gap: 2.9% of $41 including shipping plus $0.30 is more than 3% of the item, and it is charged even on the shipping the buyer pays.

But TikTok Shop sells through creators. At a 15% affiliate commission — the usual rate for a new shop trying to get traction — the cost becomes 21%, or $7.35 on the same item, and Whatnot is cheaper by $3.23. Break-even is at a 5.8% creator commission, which almost nobody offers.

Refund fees punish both, differently. TikTok Shop charges a refund administration fee of 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU, on refunds after shipping. Whatnot refunds the commission but not always the processing. In live selling, where buyers bid fast and change their minds, budget 5–10% of revenue for returns.

The format decides more than the fee

Whatnot is auction-first: buyers bid in a live room, which is how a $35 item can close at $52 because two people wanted it. That upside is not in any fee table, and it is the entire reason sellers tolerate 11.8%. It works on collectibles, cards, sneakers and anything with a reference price the room can argue about.

TikTok Shop is catalogue-first: the creator demonstrates a product, the viewer taps a basket, and the price is fixed. It converts on demonstration rather than competition, which suits beauty, home goods, apparel and gadgets — products that need showing but not bidding on. A live auction of a $19 kitchen gadget makes no sense; a TikTok demo of it makes perfect sense.

Whatnot vs TikTok Shop — FAQ

Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Whatnot?

On the platform fee, yes: 6% all-in against Whatnot's 8% plus 2.9% + $0.30 on the whole order, which lands near 11.8% on a $35 item. But TikTok sells through creators who typically take 10–20%, taking the real cost to 16–26% — at which point Whatnot is cheaper.

Does Whatnot charge processing on shipping?

Yes. The 8% commission is charged on the item price only, but the 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing is charged on the total order value including shipping and tax. That is why the effective rate rises whenever shipping is charged to the buyer.

How much should I pay TikTok creators?

15% is the common starting point for a shop trying to build traction, 10% on higher-priced items and 20%+ to secure creators with an existing audience. The commission is set per product, so it is a lever — but a shop with no commission gets no creator distribution and very little organic reach.

Which is better for selling cards and collectibles?

Whatnot. Its live auction format creates price competition on items with a known reference value, and its category commission is 8%. TikTok Shop's fixed-price demonstration model suits products that need to be shown, not bid on, and its card category is far smaller.

Do I need an audience to start on Whatnot?

No, but you need to show up. Whatnot's distribution rewards scheduled shows and repeat viewers, and new sellers typically need several weeks of consistent streams before a room fills. Sellers who treat it as a listing platform rather than a show rarely get traction.
