TikTok Shop vs Amazon: 6% against 15%, before the creator takes a cut
TikTok Shop's 6% referral fee is the lowest headline rate in mainstream e-commerce — less than half Amazon's 15%. It is also the fee that most often fails to survive contact with a creator commission, which is how the platform actually sells.
What the 6% covers, and what it does not
TikTok Shop charges a 6% referral fee that already includes payment processing, on the item price. There is no separate transaction fee and no monthly subscription. Amazon charges 15% referral for general merchandise plus FBA fulfilment of $4.40 and a 3.5% fuel surcharge for a large-standard unit up to a pound.
On a $25 item that is $1.50 against $8.30 — a gap of $6.80, or 27% of the sale. TikTok Shop wins the fee comparison by a margin no other pair on this site comes close to.
| Platform | Fees | Fee rate | Net per sale | vs best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok Shop | $1.50 | 6.0% | $11.50 | — |
| Amazon FBA | $8.30 | 33.2% | $8.70 | -$2.80 |
Worked at a $25.00 sale, $8.00 unit cost and $4.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.
Then the creator commission arrives
Most TikTok Shop volume moves through affiliate creators, and their commission is set by you: typically 10% to 20%, with 15% the number most sellers settle on to get traction. Add 15% to the 6% referral and the platform costs 21% — more than Amazon's 15% plus fulfilment on anything under about $76.
That is the honest version of the comparison. On a $25 item, Amazon's fixed $4.55 fulfilment is 18% of the sale; a 15% creator commission is $3.75, which is less. On a $90 item Amazon's fixed portion falls to 5% and the arithmetic flips: 21% of $90 is $18.90 against Amazon's $13.50 plus $4.55.
Two different demand models
Amazon is intent-driven: the customer types what they want and buys. TikTok Shop is interruption-driven: the customer was watching something else and a video sold them. That difference decides which products work. On Amazon, the winning product is one people already search for; on TikTok Shop, it is one that looks compelling in four seconds of video, which is why the platform over-indexes on beauty, home gadgets, apparel and anything with a visible before-and-after.
It also decides your cost structure. Amazon's fee buys logistics and a Prime badge. TikTok's lower fee buys nothing — you ship yourself, and the reach comes from creators you pay separately. Comparing the two referral rates without the creator line is the most common mistake sellers make when they model a move.
TikTok Shop vs Amazon — FAQ
Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Amazon?
On the platform fee alone, yes — 6% with processing included against 15% plus fulfilment. But most TikTok Shop sales come through affiliate creators who take 10–20%, which takes the real cost to 16–26%. Above roughly $70 an item, Amazon's 15% plus fixed fulfilment is usually cheaper.
Does TikTok Shop charge payment processing separately?
No. The 6% referral fee includes payment processing, which is why the headline rate is higher than a bare commission but simpler to model. Some categories differ: jewellery is 5%, and new sellers get a reduced 3% rate for their first 30 days.
What commission should I pay TikTok creators?
15% is the usual starting point for a new shop trying to get traction, with 10% common on higher-priced items and 20%+ used to win slots with creators who already have an audience. The commission is set by the seller per product, so it is a lever rather than a fixed cost.
Do I need FBA-style fulfilment for TikTok Shop?
You can fulfil yourself, or use Fulfilled by TikTok, which is available in the US and charges per-unit fees similar in structure to FBA. Self-fulfilment is cheaper per unit but your shipping speed affects the shop's performance score, and slow dispatch suppresses distribution.
Which is better for a new brand?
It depends on whether anyone is searching for your product. If the category has existing Amazon search volume, Amazon is the cheaper route to the first hundred sales. If the product needs demonstrating to be understood, TikTok Shop's creator model can create demand that Amazon search cannot capture.
