Shopify Fee Calculator

Shopify does not take a commission — and that is exactly why sellers get the maths wrong. The plan fee is fixed, the processing fee is variable, and a third-party gateway quietly adds another 2% on top of whatever that gateway charges. Enter your real numbers below.

What Shopify actually charges

Shopify's model is the inverse of a marketplace: no commission on the sale, but a fixed subscription plus a payment-processing rate. That structure rewards volume — the plan fee is the same whether you sell 10 orders or 1,000 — and punishes low average order values, because the $0.30 fixed component never shrinks.

The gateway trap is worth more than the plan upgrade

Sellers compare $39 against $105 and conclude Basic is obviously cheaper. Then they plug in Stripe or PayPal — and Shopify adds 2% of revenue on top of the gateway's own charge. On $10,000 a month that surcharge is $200, five times the $66 difference between Basic and the Shopify plan. The upgrade you should be evaluating is not the plan; it is whether Shopify Payments is available in your country at all.

Only if you cannot use Shopify Payments does the plan tier start to matter, because the surcharge is what you are buying down: 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.5% on Advanced.

Fixed fees decide your break-even, not your margin

A margin percentage hides the thing that actually kills small stores: $39 plus apps is a bill that arrives before the first order. If your contribution per order is $9, you need five orders a month just to pay for the software. The calculator shows that number directly, and it is the one to watch when you add apps — a $30 app is not $30 a month, it is three or four extra orders you have to sell before it earns anything.

Compare on profit per order, not percentage. A 30% margin on a $20 order is $6; a 20% margin on a $90 order is $18. Shopify's fixed costs make the second business easier, even though its percentage looks worse.

Shopify Fee Calculator — FAQ

How much does Shopify take per sale in 2026?

With Shopify Payments on the Basic plan, Shopify takes 2.9% + 30¢ of each online order. There is no marketplace commission on top — Shopify is your own store, so the sale is not shared with a platform. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead, Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan and 0.5% on Advanced.

Is Shopify cheaper than Etsy or eBay?

At low volume, no: Etsy and eBay have no monthly fee, so a store doing $500 a month pays more in Shopify subscription than in marketplace commission. The crossover is usually between $1,000 and $2,000 a month of sales, where Shopify's roughly 3% all-in processing beats Etsy's ~10% and eBay's ~14% — provided you can bring your own traffic.

What is the Shopify third-party gateway fee?

It is a surcharge Shopify charges when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan and 0.5% on Advanced, calculated on the transaction amount and stacked on top of the gateway's own processing fee. It exists to make Shopify Payments the cheaper default, and for most sellers it works.

Should I upgrade from Basic to the Shopify plan?

Only when the rate difference pays for the price difference. The plan costs $66 a month more and saves 0.2 percentage points on processing, so the break-even is about $33,000 a month in sales. If a third-party gateway surcharge applies to you, the break-even comes far earlier because you are also buying the surcharge down from 2% to 1%.

Do apps count as a Shopify fee?

Not officially, but they belong in the same calculation. The average store runs six to ten apps and many of the useful ones are $15–$50 a month, so a realistic app budget of $80–$150 is often larger than the plan fee itself. Enter your real total in the apps field — it changes break-even more than most sellers expect.
