Depop vs Mercari: the cheapest fees in resale, six dollars apart

These are the two cheapest places to sell secondhand in the US, and the ranking depends entirely on price. Below $6.72 Mercari's flat 10% wins; above it Depop's 3.3% plus 45 cents pulls ahead, and by $30 the gap is $1.56.

One percentage, one flat rate — so the crossover is arithmetic

Depop charges US sellers no marketplace commission on listings created or edited after July 2024. The only mandatory fee is payment processing at 3.3% + $0.45, plus an optional 12% boost if you promote a listing.

Mercari charges a flat 10% selling fee on the item price and nothing else since January 2025, when it removed the seller-side processing fee.

Worked at a $30.00 sale, $8.00 unit cost and $0.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.

The crossover is $6.72 — below that, Mercari wins

Set the two equal: 0.033x + 0.45 = 0.10x gives x = $6.72. Under that price Depop's 45-cent fixed fee is more than 10% of the sale, so Mercari's flat rate is cheaper. A $5 item costs $0.615 on Depop (12.3%) and $0.50 on Mercari (10%).

Above it the percentage dominates and Depop runs away: 4.8% at $30, 3.8% at $100 and 3.5% at $300. On a $30 sale Depop keeps $1.56 more, and across 200 sales a year that is $312.

The 12% boost can erase the advantage. A promoted listing on Depop costs 12% on top of the 3.3% processing, taking the effective rate to 15.3% — worse than Poshmark's 20% only in theory, and worse than Mercari's 10% in practice. Boost inventory that would otherwise sit; never boost items that sell on their own.

The audience is the actual product

Depop's buyers are Gen Z and the aesthetic is the point: Y2K, vintage, streetwear, archive pieces. A 1990s Harley tee can sell for three times what it fetches on Mercari because the audience is looking for exactly that and treats it as fashion rather than as secondhand clothing. The zero-commission structure is what lets sellers price it that way.

Mercari is broader and less style-led: electronics, cosmetics, games, home goods, toys. Its buyers search categories and compare prices, which compresses margin but means almost anything sells eventually. The efficient play is to list on both — Depop costs nothing to try, so anything with a look belongs there, and anything without one belongs on Mercari.

Depop vs Mercari — FAQ

Is Depop cheaper than Mercari?

Above about $6.72, yes. Depop charges 3.3% + $0.45 with no US commission; Mercari charges a flat 10%. On a $30 sale Depop takes $1.44 and Mercari $3.00. Below $6.72 the 45-cent fixed fee makes Depop the more expensive of the two.

Does Depop charge a commission in 2026?

No marketplace commission for US sellers on listings created or edited after July 2024. The only mandatory fee is payment processing at 3.3% + $0.45, plus an optional 12% boost fee if you promote a listing. Older listings that have never been edited still carry the previous 10% commission.

Does Mercari still charge a selling fee?

Yes, a flat 10% on the item price. What it removed in January 2025 was the seller-side payment processing fee, which used to be charged on top. Buyers pay shipping separately, so the 10% is the seller's entire cost.

Which is better for vintage clothing?

Depop, for anything with a look — Y2K, 1990s, streetwear, archive. Its audience searches for the aesthetic and pays accordingly, and the 3.3% processing means a $30 vintage tee nets $28.56 against $27.00 on Mercari. Mercari is better for unbranded, practical clothing where style is not the selling point.

Why are Depop's fees so much lower than Poshmark's?

Depop removed its US commission in 2024 and funds itself from processing and paid promotion instead, while Poshmark still charges 20% and bundles a flat shipping label into the deal. That 20% partly pays for the $7.97 label on heavy items, which is why Poshmark remains competitive on coats and boots despite the higher rate.
