Poshmark vs Mercari: the 10-point fee gap, and what it buys
Mercari's 10% is half of Poshmark's 20%, which looks like an easy decision. It is not, because Poshmark's commission includes processing, the buyer pays a flat shipping label, and the two apps reach different buyers. Here is the maths, and where it actually matters.
Two commission structures, both all-in
Poshmark charges a flat $2.95 on sales under $15 and 20% at $15 and above. Payment processing is inside that commission — there is no separate line, and no per-order fee. Mercari charges 10% flat, and since January 2025 it no longer charges sellers a payment processing fee at all.
On a $38 sale that is $7.60 to Poshmark and $3.80 to Mercari: a gap of $3.80, or exactly 10 percentage points. On a $12 sale the gap inverts — Poshmark's $2.95 floor is 24.6% while Mercari's 10% is $1.20.
| Platform | Fees | Fee rate | Net per sale | vs best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercari | $3.80 | 10.0% | $25.20 | — |
| Poshmark | $7.60 | 20.0% | $21.40 | -$3.80 |
Worked at a $38.00 sale, $9.00 unit cost and $0.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.
Shipping is where Poshmark claws it back
Poshmark sells a flat-rate label to the buyer — $7.97 for most categories in 2026 — and the seller keeps it out of the calculation entirely. Mercari also has the buyer pay shipping, but the label is priced by weight and the seller has to enter dimensions. For a heavy coat, the Poshmark buyer pays $7.97 regardless, which makes the listing more attractive than a $19 Mercari label on the same coat.
That is the trade: Poshmark takes 10 more points but subsidises the buyer's shipping, which converts better on bulky items. On light items — jewellery, accessories, single shirts — the shipping advantage disappears and Mercari's lower commission wins cleanly.
What each audience is worth
Poshmark is a social marketplace: parties, shares, followers. A seller who works the sharing loop gets traffic the fee does not reflect. Mercari is closer to a classifieds listing — less promotion, faster turnover on commodity items, more price-sensitive buyers. On identical inventory, sellers often report Poshmark achieving a higher sale price and Mercari a faster sale. Ten percentage points is roughly the price of that difference.
Poshmark vs Mercari — FAQ
Does Mercari charge a selling fee in 2026?
Mercari charges a flat 10% selling fee on the item price. Since January 2025 it no longer charges sellers a separate payment processing fee, so 10% is the whole platform cost on a standard sale. If you offer free shipping, the fee is calculated on the item price plus the shipping charge.
How much does Poshmark take in 2026?
Poshmark takes a flat $2.95 commission on sales under $15 and 20% on sales of $15 or more. Payment processing is included in both, and there is no listing fee or monthly fee. The buyer pays a flat-rate shipping label, typically $7.97 for most categories.
Which pays more, Poshmark or Mercari?
On a $38 sale Mercari pays $3.80 more, because 20% versus 10% is a ten-point gap. Below $15 the gap narrows and can reverse: Poshmark's $2.95 flat fee is 19.7% of a $15 sale but 29.5% of a $10 sale, while Mercari's 10% stays proportional. Above about $200 the ten-point gap becomes large enough that only Poshmark's shipping subsidy and audience justify it.
Do I pay Poshmark fees if the item does not sell?
No. Poshmark has no listing fee, no relisting fee and no monthly subscription, so an unsold listing costs nothing but your time. That is a genuine advantage over eBay, where insertion fees apply after the free monthly allowance, and over Etsy, where each listing costs $0.20 to renew.
Which is better for heavy items like coats and boots?
Poshmark, usually. Its flat $7.97 buyer-paid label does not scale with weight, so a heavy coat costs the buyer the same as a t-shirt. On Mercari the buyer sees a weight-based label that can reach $15–$20 for the same coat, which suppresses conversion. The ten-point commission gap is often smaller than the price reduction needed to sell a bulky item on Mercari.
