Discogs vs eBay for records: 28 cents apart, until the record is rare
On a $25 record the two platforms are 28 cents apart, which is not a decision. On a $2,000 rarity the $150 cap on Discogs' fee is worth $59, and that is the entire argument for listing serious vinyl there.
9% capped, against 13.6% uncapped
Discogs charges 9% of the item price plus the shipping you charge, with a $0.10 minimum and a $150 maximum per order. Payments run through PayPal, which takes 3.49% + $0.49 on PayPal checkout or 2.99% + $0.49 on card-funded payments, both charged on the gross.
eBay charges 13.6% final value fee up to $7,500, 2.35% on the portion above, a $0.40 per-order fee and a 0.35% regulatory fee. There is no cap in any realistic price range.
| Platform | Fees | Fee rate | Net per sale | vs best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discogs | $3.61 | 14.4% | $12.39 | — |
| eBay | $3.89 | 15.6% | $12.11 | -$0.27 |
Worked at a $25.00 sale, $5.00 unit cost and $4.00 of shipping you pay, general merchandise. Change any of those and the order can flip — that is what the calculator above is for.
Cheap records are a coin flip; expensive ones are not
At $25 both platforms take around 14–15.5%, and the difference is 28 cents. That is because Discogs' fixed component is $0.49 of processing against eBay's $0.40 plus 0.35% — the two are almost the same shape at that price.
The cap changes the geometry — but only above $1,667, where 9% would exceed $150. Below that, the fee is simply 9% and the flatness of it is the story. Above it the selling fee stops growing while PayPal's processing does not, so the all-in rate falls more slowly than the headline suggests: 11% at $2,000, 8.5% at $3,000 and 6.5% at $5,000.
Who is actually buying
Discogs is a database first and a marketplace second: people arrive to catalogue a collection or to check a pressing, and buy while they are there. That produces the highest-intent record buyer on the internet and a much smaller audience than eBay's. A common pressing listed at market price sells in days; an obscure one can sit for a year, which is fine, because listing is free and there is no renewal.
eBay is where you go when you do not know what the record is worth. Auctions surface the market price for oddities, box sets and collections bought blind. For a crate you have already sorted and priced against sales history, Discogs is both cheaper and faster — 9% against 14%, with no listing work.
Discogs vs eBay — FAQ
Is Discogs cheaper than eBay for selling records?
Marginally at low prices and dramatically at high ones. A $25 record costs about 14.5% on Discogs against 15.5% on eBay — 28 cents. But Discogs caps its fee at $150 an order, so a $2,000 record costs about $220 there against $279 on eBay, a $59 difference.
What is Discogs' selling fee in 2026?
9% of the item price plus the shipping you charge, with a minimum of $0.10 and a maximum of $150 per order. Payment processing is PayPal's and sits on top: 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal checkout or 2.99% + $0.49 for card-funded payments in the US.
Does Discogs charge fees on shipping?
Yes, since late 2023. The 9% applies to the item price plus the shipping charge, so inflating postage to reduce the fee does not work. The $0.10 minimum and $150 maximum apply to the order total, not to individual items.
Do I need PayPal to sell on Discogs?
Yes. Discogs requires a verified PayPal account through its payments solution, and the fee plus any tax is deducted automatically when the buyer pays. On your PayPal statement the Discogs fee appears bundled as a Partner Fee, which is why the total often looks higher than expected.
Which is better for selling a whole collection?
eBay for the unsorted part — auctions surface the market price for oddities, promos and box sets you cannot price confidently. Discogs for anything you can identify and grade, because there is no listing fee, no renewal and a buyer base that searches by pressing.
